Math Curriculum

  • The units are organized as follows.

Unit 1- Numbers and Routines (Grade 1 Review)

In this unit, students will be reviewing grade 1 Math skills. This is a refresher unit and should not pose any real struggles for students.  Some topics covered include calendars, clocks, patterns, >,<,=, and temperature.

Unit 2- Addition and Subtraction Facts

In this unit, students will gain automaticity with addition and subtraction facts through the use of turn-around facts, doubles facts, frames-and-arrows, "What's My Rule?", name collection boxes and some helpful shortcuts.

Unit 3- Place Value, Time and Money

In this unit, students will review and expand on their knowledge of place value up to 1,000, using coins to buy items with exact change, telling time, exchanging money and making change by counting up.

    Unit 4- Addition and Subtraction

In this unit, students will learn how to use diagrams to help solve addition and subtraction number stories, which may include temperature and money.  The diagrams are "Change-to-More" and "Parts-and-Total".

    Unit 5- 3-D and 2-D Shapes

In this unit, students will review and expand on their knowledge of shapes.  Students will be able to distinguish between 2-D and 3-D shapes and identify them by name.  We will also explore line segments, parallel lines, symmetry, arrays and attributes.

Unit 6- Whole-Number Operations and Number Stories

In this unit, students will be expected to use what they learned in Unit 4 to solve number stories and begin solving multiplication problems using arrays.

    Unit 7- Patterns and Rules

In this unit, students will explore patterns in counting, such as doubles and halves, practice equal sharing and collect and record data using a graph.

    Unit 8- Fractions

In this unit, students will need to build upon what they learned last year.  Students will learn that a fraction is part of ONE and use simple fractions to identify the part in a group and equivalent fractions.

    Unit 9- Measurement

In this unit, students will explore metric and standard units of measure and equivalencies- including, but not limited to, length, capacity and weight.  Students will gain practice with measuring to the nearest whole or 1/2 inch and identifying the area and perimeter of a given figure.

Unit 10- Decimals and Place Value

In this unit, students will use place value to help with the understanding of money.  Estimation, exact change, making change, and decimal notation are some of the topics that will be covered.

    Unit 11- Whole-Number Operations Revisited

In this unit, students will once again revisit whole-number operations and gain mastery with adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.  Students will also practice and apply multiplication and division skills.

Unit 12- Year-End Review and Extensions

In this unit, students will review the concepts we have covered all year to prepare for our End-of-the-Year Grade 2 Assessment.  Topics include, but are not limited to, time, money, calendars, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, measurements and shapes.
