Welcome to Mrs. H's Reading Resource Website!
"Reading aloud is one of the most important things parents and teachers can do with children. Reading aloud builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about." Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders have a strong emphasis on phonics and decoding strategies while learning to become fluent readers.
Here is a list of strategies we use in school when your son/daughter gets stuck on a tricky word...
    • stretch out the sounds
    • look for what you know
    • mark it up on a post-it
    • get your mouth ready to say the first sound
    • slide through the word
    • skip it and read on, then go back and re-read
    • look at the picture
    • tap it out
Stop and Jot is a good strategy that can easily be done at home. It's a way for students to stop and think about what they are reading, then write it down on a post-it and stick it in their text. Great for ficition and non-fiction.

2nd, 3rd and 4th graders have a strong emphasis on deeper comprehension such as visualizing, inferring and summarizing text.
