2016-2017 School YearWelcome back to an exciting, new school year. I hope you are as excited as I am to start improving those reading and writing levels. This year we will have monthly reading workshops for both parents and students to work together on reaching student goals. I will again be using Class Dojo to keep parents informed about what we are working on in class and to communicate individually. My door is always open for any parent or student that has a question or needs some help. Remember, starting your student off on the right foot for school is very important. Please make sure your students are on time for school, have the materials they need to be successful and read 5-6 times a week, your child's success is priceless.

Reading Rockets 7 Reading Comprehension Strategies Comprehension strategies are conscious plans — sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text. Comprehension strategy instruction helps students become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own reading comprehension. The seven strategies here appear to have a firm scientific basis for improving text comprehension: monitoring comprehension, metacognition, graphic and semantic organizers, answering questions, generating questions, recognizing story structure, summarizing, effective comprehension instruction is explicit instruction. -

The internet opens up our classrooms to author visits. Students love hearing and seeing real authors talk about their books and craft. Motivation is increased and metacognition is activated. Try one today! Reading Rockets' interviews with top children's book authors and illustrators are an excellent way to introduce students to those who create books kids know and love. Not just for children, these interviews are also enjoyed by parents, teachers, librarians, and other educators who appreciate the value of children's literature and get a kick out of putting a face and voice to the authors and illustrators whose work we enjoy. These interviews are available http://www.reading.org/general/publications/podcasts.aspx -
