Current Reader's Notebook Questions

Hello Students, Parents, & Guardians,
A major portion of your Language Arts grade this year will be your Reader's Notebook. As you can see from the supply list, this can be either a spiral notebook or a section in your binder. For every book we read, both assigned and independent, there will be reader's responses questions posted here, so that if students lose their handout, they may access them via my site.
Please note that questions and reading will be assigned EVERY night. As reading is such an important component of all content areas, we do expect students to be reading at least 30 minutes per night. This will improve reading and writing skills greatly, and will definitely help prepare our 8th graders for their upcoming high school and college careers. Thanks, parents & guardians, for your support with this!!!
In addition, students may also receive extra credit for time spent reading to a younger child, be it a sibling, neighbor, friend, etc. I have hundreds of children's books for our 8th graders to borrow, if they choose to participate in this project.
Our first novel of the year is Forged By Fire, which is always an 8th grade favorite!!! Please see questions below:
FORGED BY FIRE READER RESPONSES
THESE RESPONSES MUST BE KEPT IN YOUR READER'S NOTEBOOK OR BINDER SECTION. THEY SHOULD ALWAYS BE TWO PARAGRAPHS AND USE QUOTES (DIRECT AND INDIRECT) FROM THE TEXT. THIS WILL BE A MAJOR PART OF YOUR GRADE!
1. Write a character analysis of Gerald and Aunt Queen. Be sure to use details from the text to support your response.
2. What is the effect of seeing the events of chapter one develop through the eyes of a child? How does this method of telling the story affect the reader's response?
3. During times of trauma, people cope in different ways. Identify and provide examples of how Jordan, Monique, and Angel all coped with their lives.
4. Many young people live in homes where abuse is a secret, silent pain. Discuss how realistic the lives of Gerald and Angel are portrayed and how they could become a voice for young readers who are afraid to speak out.
5. Describe the role of three minor characters in this story. How do they impact the outcome of this story?
6. How are Gerald and Angel like many young people today? How are they different? What strengths are found within them that help them survive the situation in which they live?
7. In your opinion, why does Monique allow Jordan to stay in her life, despite the way he abuses her? What does this say about her character, background, and/or experiences?
8. Respond to Monique's reaction to being informed of Jordan's abuse of Angel. Why is she unable to accept it? Do you think this was a realistic reaction? Why or why not?
9. How can families learn to cope effectively with tragedy, pain, and difficulties? When is it necessary to seek assistance from someone outside of the family?
10. What is the difference between child abuse and discipline? Do you agree with Monique's style of raising Jordan and Angel? Why or why not?
11. Why did Angel let Jordan's abuse continue? Why didn't she tell? What effect did Jordan's abuse have on Angel's life? What long-range effects might develop?
12. Discuss the character of Jordan Sparks. Does he have any redeeming qualities or is he purely a negative, evil character? What might have made Jordan the person he is?
13. Discuss the many ways fire is an important in this book, both literally and figuratively.
14. Discuss the death of Jordan and whether it was necessary for him to die.
15. Explain the title of the novel. Define the word "forged". Why does the title have more than one possible interpretation?
